PRESS RELEASE Taoiseach launches enetÕs showcase project that delivers 1 Gigabit-per-second broadband to homes in rural Ireland Friday, 29th January 2016 – The GovernmentÕs National Broadband Plan (NBP) to extend high-speed broadband to all of rural Ireland over the next five years was welcomed today by Conal Henry, the Chief Executive of enet, which has built a 1 Gigabit-per-second fibre broadband network in rural North Kerry to showcase its capability to deliver the NBP programme. The network was officially launched this morning by An Taoiseach, Mr. Kenny. Mr. Henry was speaking in Ballyseedy, Co. Kerry, at an event to mark the companyÕs construction and activation of its fibre broadband network. Costing Û650,000 and providing fibre-broadband connections directly to approximately 340 premises in the locality, it is enetÕs showcase project for the National Broadband Plan. ÒWeÕre not here today to promise what we will do, but to demonstrate what we have done. WeÕve funded and built this local network, and families here are now enjoying genuinely world class broadband services. Furthermore, end users have a range of service providers to choose from, a fact that is facilitated by our open access model,Ó Mr. Henry added. An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny commented: “The National Broadband Plan is an essential component of the Government’s plan to keep the recovery going by providing the necessary infrastructure for economic growth and job creation.   Shannon Airport welcomes new Lufthansa Frankfurt-Shannon service
  Matthew Thomas – CEO Shannon Group, Declan Power – Head of Avation and Andrew Murphy – Chief Commericial Officer Shannon Group Shannon Airport , pictured as Shannon is set to get its first ever scheduled Lufthansa air service next summer when the airline introduces a new Shannon to Frankfurt route.
  The service will operate weekly on Saturday’s from the 29th April to the 28th October using an A319 aircraft.

  Lufthansa announcement marks new departure for Shannon Airport

  Welcoming the announcement Matthew Thomas, Chief Executive, Shannon Group said: “We are delighted to welcome Lufthansa to Shannon with their first scheduled service. This is a significant milestone for our airport and region by one of the world’s major airlines.

  “Germany is Ireland’s third-largest source of visitors and the addition of this new Frankfurt Main service is great news for the Irish tourism industry along the west coast and beyond as Shannon Airport will provide German holidaymakers with a gateway to the heart of the Wild Atlantic Way and Irish holidaymakers with an opportunity to explore a wonderful part of Germany. We look forward to working with the team at Lufthansa and our Irish Tourism industry partners to ensure the success of the new service.”

  Said Andreas Köster, Senior Director Sales UK, Ireland and Iceland Lufthansa Group: “We are very happy to announce this new non-stop flight directly to the heart of Germany. Customers from the Western part of Ireland will travel in in just a bit more than two hours to Frankfurt. It will connect our hub and offer a smooth connection to some intercontinental destinations such as Johannesburg, Hong Kong, Sao Paulo or Singapore.”

  The Shannon Estuary’s existing significance and future potential as shipping corridor of European scale was unfurled by students across the counties of Clare, Kerry and Limerick as Salesians College Pallaskenry claimed the second, biennial Compass Transition Year Schools Competition.

  Salesians College Pallaskenry, team captain Nathan Goldberg his presented with the award by Sean Kelly MEP.

  The final of the Shannon Foynes Port Company competition, devised to give students a deeper understanding of its and the estuary’s potential, was attended by over 300 people as All-Ireland winging player and manager Davy Fitzgerald presented the winners with the top prize of a €2,000 cheque for their school and ipads for each of the team members.

  Held at the Foynes Aviation & Maritime Museum, the Compass (Creating Our Marine, Ports and Schools Synergy) Transition Year Schools Competition drew entries from across the estuary counties, which were whittled down to just six schools – St. Patrick’ Comprehensive, Shannon, Co. Clare; Causeway Comprehensive, Co. Kerry; Salesian College, Pallaskenry; Colaiste Mhuire Askeaton; Castletroy College and Laurel Hill Secondary School from Limerick.

  The inward investment potential of the Shannon Free Zone is set to be significantly boosted following the sod-turning today by Shannon Commercial Properties for a €10 million state-of-the-art new office block.
  The high-spec 55,000 sq ft facility, built to LEED (Leadership in energy and environmental design) Gold standards and located on the newly named Airport Avenue, is the first speculative new-build by Shannon Commercial Properties, a Shannon Group Plc company. The build is part of a €25 million first phase redevelopment programme at the Free Zone.

  The first European airport sensory room developed for children and adults with neurodevelopmental challenges, including autism, was officially opened today at Shannon Airport.
  In the latest in a long list of aviation firsts on a global, European and national scale developed at Shannon, the sensory room, off the airport’s Departure Lounge, will offer a relaxing environment for passengers ahead of their flight.

The Shannon Estuary is a large tidal estuary on the west coast of Ireland where Ireland’s longest river – the Shannon joins the Atlantic Ocean.

The global leader in patient-focused innovations for structural heart disease and critical care monitoring, today announced that the company, headquartered in Irvine, California, USA, has chosen the Mid-West of Ireland for the location of a new plant to manufacture delivery components for its transcatheter heart valve therapies. This new addition to Edwards’ global supply network, which includes a similar existing facility in the United States, will initially be configured to support the manufacturing of therapies that enable minimally invasive procedures on patients’ aortic, mitral and tricuspid valves, where open heart surgery would previously have been the norm.

  Mark O’Connell W2 Consulting and Matthew Thomas CEO Shannon Group announcing a new report showing Shannon Group’s role as a major driver of economic growth in Ireland has been revealed in a new report that shows it supports 46,000 jobs, generates an economic impact of €3.6 billion per year and contributes €1.1 billion in Exchequer returns.

  The report highlights the Shannon Group as a key economic engine, delivering for the region and confirms its pivotal role as a catalyst for achieving the Government’s ambition for a more balanced distribution of growth in Ireland as set out in the National Planning Framework (NPF). The report was compiled by strategic research consultants W2 Consulting.

  The semi-state company, which was formed in 2014, comprises Shannon Airport, Ireland’s second largest long-haul airport; Shannon Commercial Properties, one of Ireland’s largest commercial property owners/developers and Shannon Heritage, Ireland’s largest operator of tourist attractions. The W2 Consulting report is based on 2016 data.

  The new Hospice, which serves Clare, Limerick and North Tipperary, contains 34 beds, all single room configuration, and four (4) overnight rooms for families, and involved an investment of over €12m, of which the Health Service Executive (HSE) funded €1.5m. The balance is being made from a variety of sources including voluntary fundraising, philanthropic support, Little Company of Mary, grants, and both corporate and private donations.

Intensified competition between Irish airports over passengers and airlines will have severe consequences for economic activity and jobs outside the Greater Dublin Area, a report by international economic consultants has warned.  The report by Denmark’s Copenhagen Economics found that significant capacity expansion planned for Dublin Airport will make it very difficult for other airports to maintain current routes and passenger levels.  It also means that other airports will not be able to act as a catalyst for regional growth as foreseen in Project Ireland 2040 and the Regional Enterprise Plan.  The report was commissioned by Limerick Chamber and supported by Shannon, Ennis and Galway Chambers in response to the need for enhanced direct air connectivity into the regions to support business and, not least, foreign direct investment.  Collectively these four Chambers represent 1,358 members supporting 105,500 jobs across the Mid-West and West. • 120922 Shannon Airport says “Bon Voyage” as inaugural Paris flight takes to the skies Monday 12 September 2022: There was plenty of ‘Bonjour’ and ‘Bon Voyage’ as Shannon Airport staff welcomed the start of a brand-new service to Paris Orly with a new carrier, Vueling. The twice weekly service to Paris Orly Airport will operate on Mondays and Fridays from today. There was an air of excitement at the departures gate for passengers bound for Orly Airport, as the first flight to Paris took off for the city of lights. Shannon’s new carrier Vueling is part of the IAG group that owns Aer Lingus. Orly Airport is the nearest airport to the centre of Paris, just 13km from the city.
