The Director General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), Mr LI Yong, paid an historic visit to Shannon today (Thursday, 18 April 2019) as part of an official visit to Ireland. The visit, which was co-ordinated by Shannon Chamber and hosted at Ei Electronics’ new Centre of Excellence, was specifically requested by UNIDO to witness the progress that has been made in Shannon since UNIDO organised a training programme on Free Industrial Zones for a Chinese delegation in Shannon almost 40 years ago. That group included Mr. Jiang Zemin, at the time a senior Vice Minister in charge of State import and export administration, who would later rise to the office of President. The lessons that this group brought back to China were invaluable and contributed greatly to the economic boom that followed.

Skillnets training networks based in the mid-west ran a free information session for SMEs entitled “Up-Skilling the Mid-West” in Limerick on Monday 6th March 2017 from 8.45am – 1pm at the Radisson Blu Hotel. The Mid-West Region Action Plan for Jobs 2015 – 2017 called for the establishment of an Enterprise Engagement Platform: “An online platform whereby ‘all organisations/providers of business supports would upload their respective grants, incentive programmes and competitions onto a centralised system.” This ‘Funding for Business’ Seminar and associated Showcase has been organised by Shannon, Limerick and Ennis Chambers to initiate, in the first instance, this process in an ‘offline’ setting.

It was a fitting tribute to Shannon Chamber that on its twentieth anniversary year, its annual golf classic was a sell-out. 168 golfers, representing 42 teams took to the fairways at Shannon Golf Club last Thursday, 18 June, to compete for four specially commissioned trophies, in honour of the occasion, and flights to Birmingham for the entire team, compliments of Aer Lingus Regional, to coincide with the fact that the six-times weekly service commenced on the same day.
