IBTS working to prevent cancellation of hospital elective surgery Stocks remain at a critically low level

Blood  stocks remain at a critical low level. Supplies of O-positive blood have plummeted to just over the past week—the lowest level recorded this year—while other key groups sit at a precarious three-day supply.

A stock management letter has been issued to all hospitals advising them of the situation. This enables the IBTS to manage the limited blood supply available more effectively across the health service. We are working closely with the hospital teams to prevent the need to cancel elective surgery or restrict treatment of patients.

”We are asking regular donors and new donors to make an extra effort to attend their nearest clinic. Donors are encouraged to make an appointment which are available online or by calling 1800 222 111. Donors can also Walk In, although they may face longer wait times than those with appointments.

Appointments can be made by calling 1800 222 111. Existing donors also have the additional option of booking online at www.giveblood.ie. You can help ensure life-saving blood remains available for those in most urgent need.
