Ministers Harris and Collins welcome appointment of Kerstin Mey as President of UL

Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science Simon Harris TD and Minister and Minister for Skills and Further Education Niall Collins TD have today welcomed the appointment of Professor Kerstin Mey as President of University of Limerick.

Ms Mey had been serving as Interim President but her appointment was ratified by Governing Authority of UL today.

Speaking today, Minister Harris said: “I want to formally congratulate Professor Mey on her appointment as President of University of Limerick. I spoke to her this afternoon to offer her my best wishes. When Professor Mey became the Interim President of UL, she shattered a glass ceiling in becoming the first female president of an Irish university.

“Today the interim title is gone as she is formally appointed President. It is an exciting time for higher education in Ireland and in Europe, and there are many opportunities to harness in the mid-west region of our country. I look forward to working with Kerstin to seize these opportunities.”

Minister Collins added: “Professor Mey has done an excellent job steering the ship at UL as Interim President, and I know she will continue to deliver excellence for students and staff at the university over the coming years.

“Professor Mey has spent her career producing pioneering academic and research initiatives in higher education.

“I want to congratulate her on her well-deserved appointment, and I look forward to working with her on many exciting projects in the future.”
