Irish Water continues to enhance Co. Clare water supply as over 1km of problematic watermains to be replaced

Tuesday, 18 January 2022: Irish Water, in partnership with Clare County Council, is replacing just over 1km of problematic watermains in the Parteen and Westbury areas to provide a more reliable water supply to the local communities.

The upgrade involves the replacement of problematic watermains with new modern pipes. The programme to replace the watermains will commence in late January and is being carried out as part of Irish Water’s National Leakage Reduction Programme.

Outlining the benefits that the mains replacement will bring, Gerry O’Donnell from Irish Water, explained: “The upgrading of these watermains will continue to strengthen and reinforce the water network in Parteen and Westbury reducing bursts and providing a more reliable supply to the area.

Gerry added: “To facilitate the safe delivery of the upgrades, there will be traffic management in place from 7pm to 7am, however, local and emergency access will be maintained at all times. The works may also involve some short-term water outages, but the project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours notice before any planned water outages. It is anticipated that outages will be at night and generally no more than 4 hrs in duration.

“We understand that this type of work can be inconvenient, and our work crews will make every effort to minimise any disruption these necessary works cause as we progress the National Leakage Reduction Programme.”

The section of works will take place between Athlunkard Bridge and the Corbally/Clonard crossroads (R463).

In order to minimise traffic impact, works will be completed at night between the hours of 7pm and 7am from Monday evenings through to Friday mornings. During this time, a stop-go traffic management system will be in place. The road will be fully re-opened to traffic at 7am each day. Local and emergency traffic will always be maintained.

The works will be carried out on behalf of Irish Water by Shareridge Ltd. and are expected to be completed by mid-April.

Residents and businesses in the areas to benefit from the planned improvements will be notified directly, and customers can phone Irish Water on 1800 278 278 if they have any questions about the project.
