This talk explores the evolution of energy management, tracing its origins from basic efficiency measures to its transformation into a cornerstone of industrial and organizational strategy. Liam will delve into the key historical milestones that shaped energy management practices in Ireland, the current trends driving innovation and adoption, and the role of data, technology, and regulation in today’s energy landscape. Barry will present on looking forward, he will discuss the future of energy management, highlighting emerging trends such as the use of AI, IoT and other areas, the challenges, and opportunities, including decarbonization, digitalization, and the integration of renewable energy. Attendees will leave with a deeper understanding of how energy management has evolved, and the strategies needed to stay ahead in an increasingly dynamic and sustainability-focused world.

This workshop will be an interactive workshop asking the participants to undertake a simple energy management maturity assessment digitally over a coffee break, followed by break out groups where the group discuss how best to collaborate on collectively improving the level of energy management maturity of all organizations in the Shannon region in the months that follow.

Meet the presenters

Liam Morris is an Energy Engineer with over 4 years’ experience and a deep commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency, having previously worked on energy management for leading life sciences manufacturing facilities.

A graduate of University College Cork, Liam completed a Master of Engineering Science in Energy Engineering, with research focused on data-driven modelling of energy consumption. This research was presented at several academic conferences, significantly enhancing his expertise in the field.

Liam held the role of Site Energy Lead at a global pharmaceutical manufacturing plant. In this capacity, he focused on leading the site energy management system, driving energy performance improvements and supporting decarbonization projects. Drawing on the skills and knowledge gained during his academic research, Liam applied data-driven approaches to optimise energy consumption, reduce wasted time and implement sustainable practices.

In addition to his technical expertise, Liam brings valuable management experience, having led teams and collaborated with stakeholders to achieve shared goals. He is also passionate about promoting sustainability within his professional community, believing that fostering a culture of sustainability is essential for creating a greener and more sustainable future.

In his current role as an Industrial Energy Consultant, Liam works with clients and industrial partners to decarbonize operations and build more sustainable businesses to develop emission reduction strategies, create and maintain robust energy management systems, and implement cost-saving initiatives.

Barry Bowen is an experienced Key Account and Stakeholder Manager working across Engineering, Education and Recruitment sectors. Prior to joining Climeaction Barry worked with two leading Cork based, international recruitment companies where he was responsible for Senior Engineering appointments and permanent recruitment solutions to diverse clients across the Engineering industry in Ireland including Sustainability, Manufacturing and Life Sciences.

To support his professional background, Barry holds a Degree from the School of Biosystems Engineering in UCD. Additionally, he pursued a Master’s in Renewable Energy to deepen his knowledge in this area.

After completing his degree, he had the privilege of spending four years at Biosystems Engineering Ltd, where he actively contributed to various sustainable energy projects across Ireland and Europe. Seeking additional growth and skills, he also pursued a further Master’s in Education and spent 7 years working in secondary level education.

Barry is actively involved in Engineers Ireland, where he enjoys being an engaged member. One aspect of his work that brings him great satisfaction is advising and connecting start-up Engineering Companies with industry experts.

Events Cancellation Policy: Cancellations will be accepted up to 72hrs before each event. Events which are cancelled within 72 hours of scheduled date shall incur a cancellation fee equal to 50% of the agreed cost. Registrants who fail to attend the event will be charged 100% of the full fee. This policy applies to all events. Please quote Purchase Order number if required on invoice.
