Shannon Chamber, through its Mid-West Lean Network, recently hosted a highly engaging and insightful lean leadership masterclass in Atlantic Aviation Group in Shannon, bringing together industry professionals to explore how lean thinking can improve operational performance, leadership effectiveness and workplace culture.

The workshop was delivered by AAG’s continuous improvement facilitator and chair of the Mid-West Lean Network, James Martin, and focused on the practical application of lean methodologies within complex operational environments, with a strong emphasis on how visual management, performance dialogue and leadership behaviours combine to drive continuous improvement.

Focusing in on AAG’s Lean Daily Management System, a structured approach that enhances operational efficiency, employee engagement, and continuous improvement, Martin showed how through integrating Lean principles into daily activities, standards can be maintained, problems identified quickly, and continuous improvement can be driven through regular activities.

He demonstrated how lean tools can deliver immediate benefits for organisations by improving visibility, communication and accountability across teams. Attendees heard how successful lean systems are not simply about metrics and reporting, but about creating meaningful conversations that drive the right behaviours and outcomes.

A major theme throughout the event was the importance of performance dialogues,  structured face-to-face conversations between leaders and teams that focus on behaviours, accountability and problem-solving rather than simply reviewing historic performance figures. Examples were shared demonstrating how organisations can shift from rear-view mirror reporting towards forward-looking operational planning that better supports decision-making and teamwork.

Real-world aviation examples illustrated how visual management systems are used to coordinate complex maintenance operations across multiple teams, engineering functions and production lines. Attendees heard how daily operational reviews, station walkarounds and cross-functional production meetings improve communication, support rapid issue escalation and help teams manage resources more effectively.

The session also examined the psychology of behaviour change within lean environments, highlighting how immediate and consistent feedback, both positive and corrective, plays a critical role in embedding new standards and sustaining continuous improvement. Practical leadership examples demonstrated the importance of physical leadership presence, coaching conversations and process confirmation in reinforcing organisational standards.

“Lean systems evolve through the integration of technical tools, management infrastructure and the development of the right mindsets and behaviours,” stated Martin.

A memorable analogy compared poorly maintained lean systems to an un-tightened home assembled wardrobe, which might appear complete on the surface but might be lacking the structure and discipline needed for long-term stability and performance.

Attendees also heard how organisations that invest in lean training programmes create a shared operational language and tempo that improves collaboration, enhances problem-solving capability and supports the development of future leaders. The importance of blame-free reporting cultures, particularly within aviation, was also discussed as a key enabler of safety, transparency and continuous learning.

One attendee speaking after the event thanked Shannon Chamber and James Martin for a really insightful and very well delivered event.

“It was very informative and sprinkled with the right amount of enjoyable anecdotes.”

The event forms part of Shannon Chamber’s ongoing commitment to supporting operational excellence, innovation and knowledge-sharing across businesses in the Mid-West region.
