Shannon Chamber encourages SMEs to adopt new Chambers Ireland’s SME WellBusiness Charter to support healthier workplaces

Shannon Chamber is urging businesses in Shannon and the wider Mid-West region to take part in a new national initiative aimed at helping SMEs build healthier, more productive workplaces.

The SME WellBusiness Charter, developed by Chambers Ireland in partnership with Healthy Ireland, is now open to all members of affiliated Chambers — including businesses here in Shannon and the Mid-West.

The Charter is a free, self-guided programme that provides SMEs with practical tools, training, and step-by-step guidance to help embed wellbeing into everyday workplace practices. Based on the Healthy Workplace Framework, the online platform is designed specifically to support smaller businesses with limited time or resources.

Why this matters for local businesses

The programme aims to make health and wellbeing a strategic advantage, supporting improvements in retention, engagement, performance, and overall organisational culture.

Commenting on the rollout, Helen Downes, CEO of Shannon Chambe, said:“Our members, who took part in the Healthy Workplace Framework focus groups in 2023, played an important role in shaping the SME WellBusiness Charter. Their feedback highlighted the need for a practical, achievable approach to workplace wellbeing, particularly for SMEs. This Charter responds directly to that need and offers businesses a supportive starting point, or a way to build on existing initiatives, while recognising the commitment employers are making to their people.”

At the national launch in Carlow, Minister Jennifer Murnane O’Connor, TD, with responsibility for Public Health, Well Being and the National Drugs Strategy, highlighted the value of making wellbeing accessible to all employers, stating:

“It is a real pleasure to be here today to launch the Chambers Ireland SME WellBusiness Charter, a free, self-guided programme designed to support Chamber members in creating healthier, more productive workplaces. Our vision is one where everyone can enjoy good physical and mental health, and where wellbeing is valued and supported at every level of society.”

Ian Talbot, Chief Executive of Chambers Ireland, also emphasised its benefits for SMEs:

“Our research shows that many SMEs face barriers such as limited time, knowledge, and budget when it comes to implementing wellbeing initiatives. The Charter addresses these challenges by offering a practical, flexible framework to help businesses embed health and wellbeing into their culture and strategy —turning it into a real strategic business advantage.”

 How to get involved

Shannon Chamber is encouraging businesses of all sizes in the area to explore the programme and take advantage of the free supports available.
