Government Seeks Views on Ireland’s Strategic Risks for 2026

The Department of the Taoiseach has launched a public consultation on the preparation of the National Strategic Risk Assessment 2026, which is intended to identify the major strategic risks facing Ireland over the short, medium and long term, including emerging risks and changes to existing risks.

We are seeking observations, evidence and recommendations from businesses and stakeholders to inform our submission.

As the consultation closes on 9 October 2026, we would be grateful to receive any input by 2 October 2026.

Views are particularly welcome on:

  • Whether the strategic risks identified in the 2024 assessment remain the most significant risks facing Ireland.
  • Emerging risks that may warrant inclusion in the 2026 assessment.
  • Changes in the severity, likelihood or nature of existing risks.
  • Risks affecting business, competitiveness, infrastructure, labour markets, trade, energy, digitalisation, climate resilience, public services or regional development.
  • Practical measures that could strengthen Ireland’s resilience and preparedness.

The current categories considered by Government include geopolitical, economic, societal, environmental and technological risks, covering issues such as competitiveness, infrastructure deficits, housing, demographic change, climate change, energy security, cybersecurity, AI and global instability.

We would particularly value insights based on your experience of the risks and challenges facing businesses and the wider economy.
