Govt announces members of bodies tasked with implementing Shannon restructuring

Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Leo Varadkar and Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Richard Bruton have announced the composition of the Steering Group charged with bringing forward proposals for the implementation of the Government decision on restructuring the State Airports and Shannon Development and the re-alignment of tourism and enterprise support functions in the region.
The Steering Group is jointly chaired by Mr. Tom O’Mahony, Secretary General at the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport and Mr. John Murphy, Secretary General at the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation and will include senior officials from those Departments as well as the Departments of Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Environment, Community and Local Government. The Group has held its first meeting and is currently planning its work programme for the period ahead.

The presidents of Ennis, Limerick and Shannon Chambers unanimously call on the Government to announce the separation of Shannon Airport from the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) as the critical and now urgent first step in the re-establishment of Shannon Airport as an economic driver of the Mid-West region. This announcement needs to be underpinned by a sustainable business model and detailed process and timetable for implementation.
The three Chamber presidents request that a formal announcement of the pre year end separation and the appointment of a Shannon Airport board be made during September, including a commitment to provide funding for the airport to cover the initial years post separation.

Legislation will be published before the end of the year to allow Enterprise Ireland and IDA carry out enterprise development functions in the Shannon Free Zone after Government agreement was secured by Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Richard Bruton TD this week.

Minister Bruton and Minister Varadkar announced in May this year the Government’s plan to create a new world-class aviation industry at Shannon as part of a series of reforms of Government agencies operating in the region. Central to that plan was the decision to merge Shannon Airport and Shannon Development into a new entity and to transfer Shannon Development’s functions in relation to indigenous enterprise and foreign direct investment (FDI) in the Shannon Free Zone to Enterprise Ireland and IDA Ireland respectively.

Significant boost for Shannon Airport as new United Airlines service to Chicago announced

Shannon Airport’s status as the transatlantic gateway to the West of Ireland is set to be significantly enhanced thanks to the announcement of a new route by United Airlines to Chicago from next summer. The new route will be in addition to the hugely successful daily service to Newark that United operate on a year round basis at Shannon. The Chicago service will generate an additional 20,000 passengers through the airport next year and provide a welcome boost for the West of Ireland in terms of business connections to the third largest city in the US, with almost 3million people. It is also a significant opportunity to increase visitor numbers into the West of Ireland from this strong market for the Irish tourism product.

Chambers Ireland has today (10/10/12) called on the Government to maximise potential savings from the Croke Park Agreement and make sure that all possibilities are on the table for discussion. The call comes in advance of the latest meeting of the Croke Park Implementation Group.

Speaking this morning, Seán Murphy, Chambers Ireland Deputy Chief Executive said “Public sector reforms are urgently needed if we are to close the deficit and balance the State’s books. There are a range of cuts which can be made that do not damage employment or affect frontline services, with public service allowances at the top of the list. Government is borrowing €1 billion a month and significant savings from allowances must surely be attainable as a contribution towards closing the gap.”

Competitiveness and Cost of Doing Business Need Priority Attention in Budget 2013... says Shannon Chamber

Shannon Chamber has called on the Government to pay particular attention to the cost of doing business in Ireland when formulating Budget 2013. With companies stringently cutting internal operating costs to survive the harsh economic climate, thus demonstrating their commitment to keeping jobs in Ireland, Shannon Chamber has requested the Government to address local government reform as a means of reducing the burden of local authority charges on business.

In its pre-Budget 2013 submission to Government, Shannon Chamber has recommended that a three percent annual target for current spending reduction be set for all local authorities, and that incentives be provided to local authorities to make further savings and drive greater efficiencies.

"Passing these efficiency savings on to commercial ratepayers by way of reduced local authority charges would demonstrate a real pro-business commitment by Government, " said Shannon Chamber president Damian Gleeson.

Chambers Ireland has today (20/11/12) reiterated its call for the Government not to increase the cost of employment by transferring the cost of sick pay onto employers or raising PRSI in Budget 2013.

Speaking this morning, Ian Talbot, Chambers Ireland Chief Executive said, “Transferring the cost of sick pay onto employers will do nothing more than damage employment. The Minister for Social Protection states that this move could save her Department €89 million, but can she not see that this is simply transferring an extra €89 million burden onto already struggling businesses?”

“Our membership is utterly opposed to any proposal to transfer the cost of sick pay to employers, with 87% of respondents in a recent membership survey indicating it would have a negative impact on their business. The uncertainty created by her constant kite-flying has already had negative effects on both business and consumer confidence.”

Decision will grant full independence to Shannon Airport & create new commercial aviation & trade entity

The Government has decided to grant Shannon Airport full independence from Dublin Airport Authority on December 31st 2012 and merge the airport with a restructured Shannon Development to form a new, publicly-owned, commercial entity in 2013.

Minister for Jobs, Enterprise & Innovation Richard Bruton and Minister for Transport, Tourism & Sport Leo Varadkar have confirmed that the Government will now implement the decision taken in principle last May.

Specific commitments for the creation of 850 jobs has been secured from two Shannon-based companies, as part of plans for an International Aviation Services Centre. These commitments depend on the separation of Shannon Airport from the DAA.

The Mid West Regional Authority (MWRA) says it will be requesting the Irish Government, through its economic and diplomatic agencies, to commence the process of negotiating with the US authorities to provide a US cargo pre-clearance facility at Shannon International Airports.

The Authority was commenting following the publication of the All-Island Airfreight Study, the first review of the airfreight sector in Ireland for over a decade.

Part-sponsored by the Irish Exporters Association (IEA) and the MWRA through the EU funded Weastflows project, report indicates that airfreight capacity has decreased by 50% over the period 2007–2011. In 2007, the total airfreight capacity (non-stop and multi-stop routings) leaving Irish airports amounted to 207,730 tonnes but by 2011 this had fallen to 105,077 tonnes.

However, the MWRA suggests that the success of the existing passenger pre-clearance installations at both Shannon and Dublin should help make the case for the facility to be extended to cargo services. The Authority also says that greater efforts must be made to maintain or develop Shannon Airport cargo handling facilities, such as including external access, parking facilities and internal cargo handling systems, to competitive international standards.

With Irish exports to China recording 10% growth rates in 2010 and 2011, the world’s second largest consumer economy is becoming increasingly important as a destination for goods made in Ireland. More than 200 Irish enterprises are already exporting to China, and the number is likely to grow in the coming years as China is expected to overtake France as Ireland’s fourth largest market by 2030.

Addressing an audience of over fifty senior business executives in Shannon, Mr Brannock said that many change projects fail due to an inability by the project leaders to visualise what the future looks like or because there is no real sense of urgency, and leadership is not supportive and involved in the change process.

“They don’t sponsor the project,” he said.

“Change programmes can also fail because there is no compelling reason for change.”

An experienced change manager, Mr Brannock said that while he is not an academic, he has accumulated vast practical experience in leading change in a career that began in the ESB and spanned managerial positions in GE Capital Aviation Services/GPA, GE Insurance Holdings, and now president and CEO of Genworth Financial, International Protection.

EU SME Centre Beijing visit Shannon Chamber

The EU SME Centre, a support service provider for European small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) facilitating market access in China, visited Shannon last week to present at a seminar organised by Shannon Chamber, themed ‘Alleviating Risk in China’. Keynote speaker Ludmila Hyklova, market access advisor, legal, gave a very comprehensive overview of the many pitfalls that companies encounter on entering or doing business with China. Her practical experience of dealing with businesses from all parts of Europe was backed up by Aidan McMahon, managing director of Gentian Services in Shannon who has been successfully working in and doing business in China for many years. Enterprise Ireland’s Philip Singleton, market manager, China, spoke about the many supports available through Enterprise Ireland to ease the transition to this new market. Attendees at the seminar were also offered one-to-one briefing meetings with the EU SME Centre representative, to hone in on issues specific to their businesses. The Shannon seminar was one of three which the EU SME Centre spoke at in Ireland during their UK/Ireland road show. They also presented in Cork and Dublin.

Take-Off for Aer Lingus Flights from Shannon to Faro

Aer Lingus’ inaugural flight, Wednesday 1st May, from Shannon to Faro took to the skies today. The three times weekly service will operate until the end of October, giving customers in the West of Ireland direct access to the ever-popular holiday resort of the Algarve.

In addition, Aer Lingus operates daily flights between Shannon and London Heathrow, three flights a week to New York and four flights a week to Boston. Aer Lingus Regional operates daily flights between Shannon and Birmingham, Edinburgh and Manchester.

This brings the total number of weekly flights with Aer Lingus from Shannon to 58 with over 8,000 seats available each week, from May through to October.

Monday, May 6th, 2013: The summer officially began for the newly independent Shannon Airport over the May bank holiday weekend as the premier gateway to and from the western half of the island launched its schedule for the busy months ahead.

In all, 33 separate destinations will be served this summer from Shannon. Among these are five new services - two in the US (Chicago and Philadelphia), two in mainland Europe (Alicante and Faro) and one in the UK (Glasgow).

Among the 33 destinations are six hub airports (Chicago, Boston, Heathrow, JFK, Philadelphia and Newark), offering Shannon passengers one-stop connectivity to thousands of airports worldwide.

Airline offering over 2,300 weekly seats to and from United States

SHANNON 8 May 2013 – Delta Air Lines (NYSE:DAL) seasonal nonstop service between Shannon Airport and New York’s John F. Kennedy airport will recommence on 11 May 2013.

The flight will operate daily throughout the peak summer season using a Boeing 757-200 aircraft with 170 seats in conjunction with Delta’s joint venture partner Air France KLM.

“Our nonstop summer service increases passenger choice to and from the U.S. and the west coast of Ireland, supporting travel for thousands of holidaymakers and helping to give a boost to the local economy,” said Perry Cantarutti, Delta’s senior vice president for Europe, Middle East and Africa. “Delta is offering customers even more travel options to popular destinations such as San Francisco, Orlando and Las Vegas and we are already seeing very positive booking figures for the summer months.”
